Women who read the Guru Granth Sahib and sing hymns are allowed to perform kirtan in all Gurdwaras of Punjab. However, these women are not allowed to sing sikh hymns inside the Golden Temple. The Golden temple is the most important and powerful temple in Sikhism. State Minister Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa said, in Sikh history women have never been discriminated. They have always been treated equal to men. The Shiromani Akali Dal’s leader Jagir Kaur had also asked permission for expert female singers to be allowed to perform kirtan at the Golden Temple. The Punjab State Assembly on 7th November 2019 announced that Sikh women will now be allowed to perform kirtan at the Golden Temple in Amritsar. They are doing this to ensure Sikh men and women are equal. The decision was passed by a special assembly session for the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev. Guru Nanak Dev wanted a society everyone is treated equally. Where there is no descrimination on the basis of skin, religion, etc. This is why they will allow women to sing in the golden temple. The decision will now be sent to the Akal Takht which is a Sikh group and the SGPC which manages all sikh temples. Now we have to wait for their permission.
