Why Religious Beliefs Aren’t Just Silly

Posted By on August 1, 2019

From a distance, it can all seem very silly. These people have gone to Lourdes, in the foothills of the Pyrenees, in the hope that the Virgin Mary might cure them of cancer and heart disease. These people have gone to Medjugorje in Bosnia Herzegovina to pray they might get a chance to talk to dead beloved relatives. And these people are praying at the Western Wailing Wall of the old Jewish Temple in Jeruselam and leaving all sort of notes for God to read in the cracks between the stones. No wonder some Atheists just think the whole of religion is ludicrous, and they aren’t bothered about saying so very directly. But that’s the wrong way to look at religion. What religion teaches us isn’t about what’s true, but about what many of us here on earth desperately want to be true, for some pretty understandable reasons. At one point in the bible, Jesus goes into the house of a man called Jarus, whose 12-year-old daughter has just died. Everyone is weeping and lamenting. But Jesus calmly says that she’s not dead, she’s just asleep. “Little girl, I say to you get up!” He says. We shouldn’t laugh or dismiss the whole thing as nonsense. When your child is very sick, you may well end up believing in miracles. Because at the end of the day, under immense psychological pressures, you love your child more than you care about the laws of physics and biology. And when your loved ones do die, it can take a very robust mind indeed not to imagine, late at night when the sadness becomes overwhelming, that somehow your parent, or child, or friend, is somewhere still around and in a better place than they were. And that they might be able to see us as we go about our daily lives and forgive us and understand what we, perhaps, never found a way to say to them. And when you’re in a complete mess, and all you want to do is cry in shame, you might well start to long for someone who could understand. Someone wise and forgiving, with kindly sympathetic eyes who wont judge and will be patient and kindly, like an ideal mother. Science may very rightly deny the existence of the Virgin Mary, let alone paradise and miracles. But these beliefs shouldn’t just be interpreted as pieces of stupidity. They are signs of extreme emotional distress and desperation, which should rightly elicit in us understanding and sympathy. Religious beliefs are, of course, technically false. But they’re coming from a very tender and vulnerable place, which needs our empathy. Of course Atheists are technically right. But there’s no point getting maddened by the apparent irrationality of the religious. We have to understand it and appreciate the intensity of the longings that lead some of us to believe in fantasies against all odds. Because reality is just sometimes unbearably painful.

  1. We can cherry pick the nice things out of religion. But what about the bad? The oppression, rape, genocide and hate. These affect our society and way of thinking.

  2. Religion brings guilt, fear and hatred of others. It will be a huge step forward in human progress when religion is gone. We can have community, hope and acceptance of others, at least more than we have had in our history so far.

  3. You're right, it's not JUST silly, its DANGEROUS and STUPID. Religion pretends to be the good in the world but the record shows that it is more likely and often evil.

  4. As an atheist my whole life I do not think that religion is silly. I believe that it served its purpose and now that we have the advanced knowledge and experience of living on this planet has brought us to know that heaven is not real. It is a false prophecy that is dangerous as people live their lives without consequence or caring about the world around them. What do they care they will be in heaven. I believe that religion served its purpose to be a guiding light in the darkness but this ancient way of thinking is going to be the downfall of the human race as real problems such as overcrowding, pollution, and greed collapse our society and not the devil.

  5. It's shocking and interesting to see people in the comments not understanding the simple logic of this video. You don't believe in God, you wish him to be real. We are all slaves of our desire.

  7. I just dont understand how anyone with an ounce of intelligence is religous it really does astonish me. I mean ,made sense years and years ago when people were naive of the world around them , but just with science and all our achievements I dont understand. Theres 1000s upon 1000s of religions out there , I don't understand how someone can sit there and think there ONE is the correct one. How can someone be so narrow minded and self absorbed to think that way. ??? Its literal brain wash. All of it. Wed be generations more advanced if it wasnt for religon. Think about how long religon has stunted scientific achievements. Events like the Spanish Inquisition. Or just scientists literally being shunned for discovery's contradicting their religon. Not to mention religion is the root cause of a majority of any war all through out human history. It does nothing but divide. The day religon is extinct is the day the human race will thrive and work as one. But unfortunately I feel as there will always be religion.

And when you said people get angry over religion, it's Because people like you shove your beliefs down Other people's thoughts

Its annoying cuz i live in a very religious state yet i only have like 3 non religious friends. But when i tell a very dank joke to them, they get it and laugh unlike the uncultured mormans that dont get half the stuff im saying.

I just look at them as words you say to your homies when you are having fun or something lol. whenever i say a bad word to a religious person they are like: "that was a bad word! thats not good to say because it puts gods name in vein! you are not good person!" but whenever i say a bad word to a non religious person they sometimes dont say anything, sometimes they laugh. religious people are weird. Its sad they got brainwashed that much..

  14. The School of Life did you just seriously made this video 3 years ago? I'm genuinely surprised the fact that you are an atheist. It makes me appreciate you even more!

Jesus (God) send by Himself to sacrifice Himself for Himself to save use all from Himself to make us ask forgiveness from Himself which Himself already know everything that will happen.

I'm so sorry what is God thinking..? making things even more complicated is way to go God! Lmao.

    ● Examples:
    1. I created a game and after that I decided to create the NPC (Non Player Character) in my own world in that game that I made and I create them as a villain (evil) it's their fault But not the creator…?! What the hell?!

    2. I make a movie with a bad ending and it is their fault for having a bad ending (murdered, raped, and etc) and God.. want them to pray for accepting him even he (God) already create our plan and our fate But not the creator…?! AGAIN.. what the hell?!

    ● "Q and A" + Counter Question:

Q: But we have free will as a gift from God.
A: Hmm.. No because the bible say he is "all knowing" which make him omniscient (all knowing" in fact.. God said he have a plan for ALL people. Not 1, 2, or 3 but ALL.

Q: Evolution is a lie! Because fossils is being placed by a Demon.
A: Yep so what is goosebumps do? it seem pointless also why we have a bone tail? by saying "for make us stand up" is a proof that is evolution! Apes also have a bone tail did you know apes also can do some amazing thing like humans? it also being documented by so many scientists, also the crazy thing is some fish can survive on the land whoch is work of evolution from million of years ago.

Q: Scientists is just creating a fairy tale like evolution. Atheist is a cult/religion!
A: Scientists did not created science! But they found the way and test it and it works! all you need is observe the subject and tested them/it. For example:
the first time human being saw earth, they thought the earth is flat. But now we know earth is round and why we wouldn't fall off? because of gravity just throw a ball and I guarantee you! It will not fly like a bird.. and if you say "that ball just fly like a bird" proof it please. Lol I bet you use the power of editing. Also Atheist is not a cult, it basically saying "People that are not doing anything is… a HOBBY." OR "People that are NOT smoking is… a HABIT."

Q: God love you so much he even send his beloved son down to this planet earth and he is being sacrifice by his own Father
A: I already see this kind of argument a lot of time but okay.. so if your Dad do something awful he will send his own kid for fixing his Dad mistake? that sound evil and cruel like what sadistic parents will do! Also do not forget after Jesus being sacrifice he get eternal life in heaven with all the blessing he got and because people did not accept him as lord and savior we will get burned forever? No thanks!

Q: God is justice and all loving God!
A: Okay but let me ask you this… People who did not believe in God but he help someone who need money for his dad that suffer cancer for a long of time, help homeless people who almost die on the streets, and etc but did he will end up in hell forever?!
A 2: People who raped little kid and then he killed them all just got saved because he's accepting Jesus? according to your bible if you accepting Jesus as your Lord and Savior you will go to Heaven which is unfair, again that little kid who got raped did not choose to get raped.

Q: What? But Hitler deserve hell..!!!
A: So… Finite crime need Infinite punishment? How is that work? Hitler deserve death sentence or a harsh punishment! again NO ONE deserve such a punishment LIKE Hell it is so ridiculous. Also if Hitler get eternal torture what he will learn? Sure! he will know what he did is wrong but.. There's no second chance whatsoever even if you begging for God forgiveness also no happiness gained even if we laugh for Hitler being tortured, suffered, cried, and etc for ALL ETERNITY. It will make us no difference than hitler then… Except it much worse!

EVEN IF… you say "Hell is not forever" so what?! It definitely still cruel, why would an innocent kid or innocent adult get burned up in hell for short amount of time..? by that definition He is NOT Omnibenevolent either.

IF you say "people who raped little kid and then he killed them DID did not get saved by that definition… We did not have a Free Will because our choices is in God's hand. by that definition He is NOT Omnibenevolent either.

IF you say people will get burned up in hell forever by that definition all people who rejected Jesus will get the same punishment like Hitler did by that definition.. He is NOT Omnibenevolent either of COURSE it is!

Conclusion: Having a Religious belief is NOT okay at all Do not force someone to join your cults and Also do not threat them in mentally or physically! Also even having a beliefs because of faith is destroying our world. Why you may ask? Because so many people died in the name of God and Faith. Okay let say… for the sake of argument, Religious people did not kill unbelievers or anyone else. But you guys wasting our resources for something that isn't true instead helping someone who need money or maybe donate it to science to make cure for cancer, robotic body parts for handicapped, and etc. But, you guys wasted all of that just for creating your "Holy place" for praying to your God much better! Which is useless… and in fact that "Holy place" is just a generic building that wasted so much energy, money, and time.

  16. The fact to dismiss every possible outlook on life is philosophically irresponsible. For me i started with Buddhism then i went to humanism(there is no God but humans should aspire to look into ourselves and improve all things around us) and i ended up a Christian and i don't think there is anything that would change my faith (if by somehow there is then so be it altough i highly doubt it cause believe me i looked)
Jesus was an actual person in history (written as Christius in Latin) who did have a following of people in his name Christians and he was put to death by crucifixion. And btw! There is no logical reason as to how his body disappeared from his tomb other then a resurrection because he was gaurded by Roman soldiers for the fact of trying to deny the chance of the body being stolen to say there was a resurrection. ALSO Christs apostles were beaten imprisoned and KILLED for their faith in Jesus..why would they be willing to die for something that's false?
So the question if he's real is insufficient you should rather ask if he divine and the answer you get comes out to one of these two things
    1. It's just bumbo jumbo history taken out of context
Or 2. What Christ taught and claimed is true and that means that becomes the most important thing in your life
Thanks if you read my post i just strongly disagree that religious people are incompinate in being rationally and philosophically sound.

Why?Because they´re all so concerned about what people shall think or feel. They want to conquer people´s mindset and work on it to their benefits. They think in absolutes. Why don´t they bring truth, honesty, sincerity, clarity and love on the school schedule? If they want people to flourish this could be the way to do it.

  24. I have read multiple surveys, statistics, and articles, I’ve even done my homework about history. The number one thing the made more people violent than money— was religion. Look at any example of major conflict before the 1900s(the reason for this becomes of the world wars). The Spanish Inquisition, the snakes of Ireland, ever since the great awakening, there has been a decline in believers.

Look at problems today, there have been multiple accounts of a rehab group called “Teen Challenge” run by people with Christian faith, to have been abusive towards their patients. Forcing isolation on them, forcing them to pray every night, very strict rules which lead to sever punishments, I mean shits fucked.

Want another example? Fucking look at the war in the middle east, the reason why so much fighting and gunfire is happening is because of one thing: religion. When ISIS had the capital of Syria, a woman described her experience as frightening. She accidentally showed her ankles without even known, she was caught by religious police and was beaten to where she could barely stand. Another woman told a story where she accidentally did te same thing, instead two police officers pulled her to an ally way and raped her.

Religion can make people do fucked up things, read up on this shit, it gets pretty fucked.

I am a happy person genuinely. I don't invite negativity into my life at all. I'm selective in who I bring into my circle and I have a great eye for red flags in people. I work hard and I have strong moral values. I don't need a "God". I don't need a "Heaven" and I most certainly don't need a "Hell" to scare me into being a good person.

  37. This "thing" that people hate religion is something typically western, especially European western. Look at the history of Europe. Let's face it, Europe has know its best scientific period under the rule of secularism. And Europe has known its worst scientific period under the rule of Christianity.
The Church has really abused this concept explained in the video. And really used that and their religious position, to rule the people. And the 'funny' thing is, people in medieval Europe were at some times even prohibited people to read the Bible, let alone other books containing new ideas. A lot of new thinkers were persecuted such as Galileo.
We see thus a major reaction out of that. The enlightenment, the renaissance, the French revolution. A result of this.
The thing is, this is something that happened in European history. What a lot of Europeans, and thus other westerners don't understand is that this didn't necessarily happened to everyone on the planet. There are other people in history that have known their best scientific age under the rule of their religion. Several Islamic empire, the Greeks, ancient Hindu empires, etc…
So, we "copy paste" our history unto others and therefor say everyone is wrong except us. That's a very egocentric mentality.

  42. So religion is for the mentally inflicted who need consolation? How demeaning and patronizing. Many of the worlds greatest Scientists believe/believed in God. The man who invented the Big Bang theory was a catholic priest! Science and religion do not contradict one another, but rather they strengthen the reality that there is a God. You say there is no God? We live in the most secular society in centuries and what is the result? Millions of suicides, suicide attempts, mental health patients, higher prescription of mental health medication etc. Man has made himself God and the result is anxiety and depression widespread in our society. Fulton Sheen describes it perfectly when he said, if I went around town every week proclaiming that there was no ghosts then I would be locked up in a mental asylum, yet if I were to do it about God, saying there is no God, people would support the idea because they no it’s not so ridiculous that God could exist and indeed, he does exist. There is no atheism without something to atheiate against.

  44. What religion teaches us isn't about what is true, but about what many people of us here on earth desperately want to be true

The problem is religions frame their theologies as being actually true and people believe them to be the case. What people "desperately want to be true" is of almost no intellectual value to me. We should care about what is actually true.

When your child is sick, you may well end up believing in miracles.

And I would be totally unjustified in doing so. But even more than that, I find this statement to be insultingly condescending. I have experienced real tragedy and grief in my life. And while a sense of denial and bargaining can come with that grief, at no point did I believe reality would suspend itself for my sake. To the contrary, truly working through grief requires one to be honest about has happened and what will likely happen going forward. Telling yourself a story about afterlives and meeting up with dead loved ones is not a comfort that comes without immense cost.

Religious beliefs are, of course, technically false. But they're coming from a very tender and vulnerable place which needs our empathy

It's one thing to empathize with the problems of other people. It's another to coddle the false beliefs they use to frame those problems. We all have problems, and many of those problems are actually shared by entire communities, societies, nations, and even the human species as a whole. So it's imperative that we converge on our understanding of those problems for everyone's sake, preferably in a way that respects reality as best as it can be understood.
