THE OLD MALCO THEATER BUILDING IN OWENSBORO WILL FILL UP AGAIN SOON. IT’S BEEN EMPTY FOR FOUR MONTHS — AFTER THE THEATER MOVED TO A NEW LOCATION. BRAD– BUT THE BUILDING WON’T BE FILLING UP WITH PEOPLE WAITING TO SEE THE LATEST HIT MOVIE. IT’S BECOMING THE NEW HOME FOR LEGACY OWENSBORO CHURCH. EYEWITNESS NEWS MIKE PICKETT FINDS OUT WHERE ARE THEY ON THAT PROJECT? (MIKE) IT’S BEEN A PLACE WHERE PEOPLE SAW THE LATEST BLOCKBUSTER MOVIE — OR AWARD WINNING FILM. (MELISSA PHILLIPS) “It’s been a date night place for my husband and I for the last 20 years, every Sunday.” (PASTOR JEFF PHILLIPS) “Often times, we enjoy going to the movies, and we’ve been coming here for years.” (PASTOR JEFF PHILLIPS) “The ticket booth was there. That, of course, is gone.” (MIKE) FOR PASTOR JEFF PHILLIPS — HIS WIFE MELISSA — AND THEIR CONGREGATION AT LEGACY OWENSBORO CHURCH — THESE AUDITORIUMS WILL FILL UP AGAIN — FOR A DIFFERENT TYPE OF GATHERING. (MELISSA PHILLIPS) “Who knew every Sunday we would be here, having church?” (PASTOR JEFF PHILLIPS) “Whenever Legacy church purchased this, it was sort of surreal in some ways because we own the place we used to come almost every week to go to the movies.” (MIKE) LEGACY OWENSBORO CHURCH BOUGHT THE OLD MALCO THEATER ON FREDERICA STREET. MEMBERS ARE RENOVATING IT TO BE THEIR NEW HOUSE OF WORSHIP. NINETY PERCENT OF THE DEMOLITION WORK INSIDE THE BUILDING IS DONE. CONTRACTORS ARE REDOING THE LOBBY — AND TRANSFORMING MOVIE AUDITORIUMS FOR A NEW SANCTUARY — CLASSROOMS AND A GAMING ROOM. (PASTOR JEFF PHILLIPS) “We have had activities for all ages, but this really opens an opportunity for us to really be, if I want to say, I don’t want to say over the top, but we’re going to really be able to give our students something to do.” (MIKE) THE CHURCH CURRENTLY LEASES A BUILDING NEAR KENTUCKY WESLEYAN COLLEGE. THE PHILLIPSES SAY THE MOVE LETS THEM OWN THEIR OWN BUILDING AND IT PUTS THEM IN A MORE RECOGNIZABLE PLACE. (PASTOR JEFF PHILLIPS) “It’s our own property. We’ve been leasing for 9 years, and what this has done is give us the opportunity to have our own property.” (MIKE) PERMITS ARE STILL NEEDED TO DO SOME RENOVATIONS — BUT THE FIRST SERVICES COULD TAKE PLACE INSIDE THE BUILDING BY THE END OF THE MONTH. (MELISSA PHILLIPS) “We’re just doing the renovations to make sure we get the walls up, everything’s painted and everything’s set so that we can get in. Once we get in, then we’ll start adding on to it.” (PASTOR JEFF PHILLIPS) “We are not waiting.” (MIKE) IN OWENSBORO, MIKE PICKETT, EYEWITNESS NEWS.
