Living Embodiment of Hindu God | The Story of God

Posted By on September 17, 2019

[dramatic music] MORGAN FREEMAN (VOICEOVER):
I’m about to have an audience with a
living embodiment of the Hindu god, Taleju. My hope is that their Kumari
remains expressionless. Even the hint of a smile is
said to bring misfortune. [mystical music] MORGAN FREEMAN: She didn’t– she didn’t smile. As a matter of fact, she didn’t
have an expression at all. MAN: OK. So that’s good for me, right?
MAN: That’s a good thing. That’s a good thing. MORGAN FREEMAN: All right. And I also noticed that her
feet were up on a little– a little platform. MAN: Pedestal, yes. So while she is the Kumari,
she should not touch the Earth. And so she will
be carried around. MORGAN FREEMAN: I see. OK. MAN: And so she gets carried
around in a palanquin– MORGAN FREEMAN: Yeah. MAN: –even when she
has to go to festivals and to attend to other
rituals in the city. MORGAN FREEMAN (VOICEOVER):
This royal treatment isn’t required merely out
of respect for the divine. It avoids her receiving
cuts to her feet. If she bleeds, she
ceases to be a goddess. Of course, that day can
only be put off so long. With the onset of
puberty, this young girl must return to a way of life
that may now be alien to her. It seemed like this would be
kind of a rough deal for a kid. It is a rough deal for a kid. But I think in this part
of the world, you know, we are constantly
reminded about our duty. Yes. MAN: And so in the
years to come then people take great
pride in the fact that she was able to
serve our community by taking on this duty. MORGAN FREEMAN: And
after she’s no longer a– MAN: Right. –goddess, what is she? You know, once
she reaches puberty, then the community begins to
search for a second child who will replace her. She enters the regular
family and I think– She becomes just a regular– A regular girl. Got it.

  4. Treating children like this without allowing them to enjoy their childhood and doing this in the name of ignorance is just another form of ignorance that needs to be addressed.

  5. What I don’t understand is how can a human accept this? Do they literally believe that she is a goddess? All the major religions believe that there is one God then here comes these people who are literally calling a child A Goddess. Shameless

  9. Morgan should consult someone specialized in 'Kumari' culture and 'Masto' culture before making this documentary. There is plenty of logic why 'Kumari' culture exist till date. In 'Masto' culture, god can enter into human body to communicate with general public. It is believed that Taleju Bhawani (She is Devi and symbol of Shakti i.e. power) enter the body of very innocent girl up to her puberty once priests selected the young girl for goddess. After puberty goddess left her manifestation in that particular girl and will go to next girl selected by priests. When in throne she is representative (in religious term goddess is inside her) of goddess Taleju.

  10. "She cannot touch the earth."

touches both mankind which comes from earth and materials that also came from earth.

Guess it just means she can't walk then?

Feel sorry for the girl, she is no living embodiment of a "god" at all, which makes her robbery of her childhood even sadder.

  11. You people praying to a young girl as a god? This is legit child abuse and could end up even worse than my life. Not letting her walk smile and then she's always carried around ?

  16. Wow not smiling is seen as bad, does she get any time to be a happy child?!

Why not force boys to be these slaves rather than girls, they never have periods. Even better choose consenting adults.

This is just another way people are exploiting girls & this horrific tradition breeds to be stopped.

  17. Its in Nepal. And there's no way her life is being worse as people are commenting. Its just a ritual and she would be treated like this for a couple of days only. She lives as other kids do.

  21. Whoever is telling that "They are abusing the child & not letting her to leave her childlife freely" You must know the proper facts first . She can play with Childrens only on special occasions she is presented like that. Btw it symbolize that we actually workship girls as goddess so it's better you start doing it too more than humiliating them.

  22. Western people in the comments unable to understand other cultures due to an inbred idea of Western supremacy. Since English-speaking Western countries are the most liberal, any other country pales in comparison and thus makes people unable to comprehend or respect different cultures.

  29. I'm sorry but this show is such a poorly researched, western cliche peddling a narrow Abrahamic thought. Who on Earth is Morgan Freeman to talk about Eastern Religions. He doesn't even attempt to understand any of it.
