Islam & ISIS – Chopping off hands and feet

Posted By on October 15, 2019

[music] One of the most barbaric practises that Islamic
State carries out is amputating body parts. Pretty much everybody knows that cutting off the hand of a thief
is commanded very clearly in Islam, I will dive into the Islamic sources relating to the punishment for theft in detail
a little later in the video, but I want to begin by looking briefly at another case where amputations are ordered
in the Quran. The punishment of those who wage war against
Allah and His messenger and strive to make mischief in the land is only this, that they should be murdered or
crucified or their hands and their feet should be cut off on opposite sides or they should be imprisoned; this shall
be as a disgrace for them in this world, and in the hereafter they shall have a grievous chastisement As we saw in an earlier video, “mischief in
the land” referred to people being non-believers. That was enough for most scholars to be mischievous in itself. But as Ibn Kathir mentions in his commentary
on the verse, it has a few other meanings. The correct opinion is that this Ayah is general
in meaning and includes the idolators and all others who commit the types of crimes the Ayah mentioned One of the crimes mentioned believed by Muslim
sources to be covered by this verse is that of armed robbery. The criminal, according to Sunni Islam in the
Hanafi and Hanbali sects, has to be armed with at least a stone or a stick.. obviously carrying anything more deadly
like a sword also counts as being armed. While the other two Sunni schools, the Malikis and Shafiis, say that
you don’t need to be armed with anything, as long you are threatening physical violence to forcefully take what
isn’t yours. Let’s take a look at how the punishments for
this so-called armed robbery are carried out among the major Islamic schools of sharia. Remember there are four major Sunni schools
that interpret sharia and a major Shia one. We now open up volume 17 pages 141-142 of
a large collection of books on Islamic laws called “al-mousou3a al- fiqhiya” which translates roughly to (The
encyclopaedia of jurisprudence) We read:
The armed robber is amputated at opposite ends (hands and feet) if he robbed but didn’t
kill, this is according to the Hanafi, Shafii and Hanbali schools.
As for the Maliki school, they view that the imam can choose to implement any of the punishments
mentioned in the verse except forced exile.
Remember the punishments included death and crucifixion as well chopping off hands and
feet from opposite ends. In the Maliki school of thought a person is
crucified while alive and dies on the crucifix. He is then left dead on the crucifix for several days in public and
that duration is determined by the imam who carried out the sentencing. As for the punishment to armed robbery according
to Shia Islam, the exegesis of chapter 5 verse 33 in tafsir al- Mizan, linked below in the description box
along with everything else in this video, tells us the imam has the choice to do everything with an armed robber,
including exile. We get an example of the distance involved
in exile by telling us that Ali, the most revered figure in Shia Islam after Mohamed, exiled a couple of people from
Kufa to Basra, a distance of around 400km. We now move on to the main part of the video,
which is looking at the punishment of theft. In contrary to armed robbery which we’ve just mentioned, stealing
in this context is done discreetly without threatening violence. The Quran could not be clearer on the issue.
Let’s read chapter 5, verse 38: Chapter 5 verse 38 reads:
As for the thief, both male and female, cut off their hands. It is the reward of their
own deeds, an exemplary punishment from Allah. Allah is Mighty, Wise. Now the verse is very clear. Muslims have
three options here as they do with all the other barbaric punishments of their religion. They can either attempt to
justify the unjustifiable and pretend the laws are perfect for all places and all times – and many take this
option. Or they can pretend when the Quran says “cut off their hands”, it actually means tickling the thief’s hands
or trimming their fingernails and giving them a manicure. Or, there is the third option, accept what’s written, realise
this is not something that would ever come from an all merciful God, and leave the religion so you don’t have
to make these pathetic excuses anymore. One of the pathetic excuses that attempts
to justify this punishment is to claim that a hand is not cut off unless something of huge value is taken. At other
times, they’ll claim that it can only be implemented in a society that is super rich and prosperous. These are simply lies. Let’s look at the authentic hadiths and see
what the minimum value of stolen goods has to be, before a person has his hand chopped off. The Prophet (?) said, “The hand should be
cut off for stealing something that is worth a quarter of a Dinar or more.” Now, some people may say, well, we don’t know
what the value of a quarter of a dinar was back then? Maybe you could buy a whole town with that quarter of a dinar. So let’s read another hadith, and keeping
in mind that 12 dirhams equal one dinar. Therefore three dirhams equal a quarter of a dinar. The Prophet (?) cut off the hand of a thief
for stealing a shield that was worth three Dirhams. In case that wasn’t enough, cutting someone’s
hand off for stealing a shield, let’s see what else people had their hands cut off for.
This is yet another hadith from the most reliable source for mainstream Muslims – Sahih Bukhari.
Allah’s Apostle said, “Allah curses the thief who steals an egg (or a helmet) for which
his hand is to be cut off, or steals a rope, for which his hand is to
be cut off.” So a thief who steals one egg or some rope,
will have his or her hand cut off. That’s it… Just an egg and you lose your hand forever. According to the apologists,
this is THE best way to punish for the crime of stealing an egg. Why do they say that? Did they all randomly
come to the same conclusion through a detailed analysis of criminal laws and an assessment of effective
justice systems throughout history? Mmmm… Noo… They all support it because it’s what Mohamed said, if he gave
them something else instead, they’d be claiming THAT was the best punishment ever no matter what it was. Four out of five of these Sunni and Shia schools
of sharia have set a quarter of a dinar as the minimum limit of value for the punishment to be carried out.
The only exception is the Hanafi school of thought which plays it safe because of a weak hadith that mentions 10
dirhams as a limit… 10 Dirhams is just under a single dinar, which was the main currency and still not worth a lot. According to sharia, theft is not punishable
in a number of circumstances. These include if the thief is a minor who has yet to reach puberty and a thief who
is insane. For all schools of thought except the Maliki one, a son stealing from his father or a father stealing
from his son also has no punishment. The punishment also isn’t carried out if someone
steals something that is forbidden in Islam like alcohol, pork or musical instruments, as Muslims are allowed
to take these items away from their owners and smash them up. A thief is determined guilty if two male witnesses
testify that he stole something. For the first time offender… the ruling
is unanimous. The right hand is to be chopped off, and it doesn’t matter whether the person used the left hand to steal. In Sunni Islam, the cut is generally done
at the wrist joint and cauterized immediately afterwards with boiling oil, while in Shia Islam, there are a few
more variations, which include just the four fingers leaving the palm and thumb intact, up to all the way to the elbow. What happens if a thief repeats the offence.
All five major schools of thought are in agreement that following the first offense, the left foot is chopped off
and cauterized with boiling oil. We then have a variation of opinions over
what occurs to the thief if he steals again a third time. The Sunni hanafi sect and the main Shia sect
say a thief is imprisoned for life the third time they are imprisoned and killed if they steal again while in prison. The Malikis and Shafiis say the third time
a thief steals, his or her left hand is chopped off, the fourth time they steal you chop off the right foot and
if they steal a fifth time, they are jailed. The Hanbalis also chop off all four limbs
with the first four instances of theft, but they kill them instead of imprisoning them at the fifth time. They base their ruling on what an overly enthusiastic
Mohamed did in this authentic hadith: It was narrated from Al-Harith bin Hatib that
a thief was brought to the Messenger of Allah and he said:
“Kill him.” They said: “O Messenger of Allah, he only stole (something).” He said: “Kill
him.” They said: “O Messenger of Allah, he only stole (something).”
He said: “Cut off his hand.” Then he stole again, and his foot was cut off. Then he stole at the time of Abu
Bakr, until all his extremities had been cut off. Then he stole a fifth time, and Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with
him, said: “The Messenger of Allah knew better about him when he said: ‘Kill him.”‘ Then he handed him over
to some young men of Quraish to kill him. Two things to note here with this hadith…
firstly, when this guy got all his limbs chopped off, how the hell did he keep stealing? Secondly, we hear a lot
of apologists who claim that the punishment may seem barbaric and severe, but that’s only because it’s so severe that
it stops people from doing it altogether… well, it certainly didn’t work with this guy did it… The punishment of cutting one’s hand off was
established during the pagan times before Islam appeared. Muslims admit that this was a punishment that was
prevalent at the time and Islam incorporated it into sharia.
We can read about this briefly in tafsir Ibn Kathir. “Allah commands and decrees that the hand
of the thief, male or female be cut off. During the time of Jahiliyyah, this was also the punishment for the thief,
and Islam upheld this punishment.” So Islam takes this rule from the period of
what it calls “jahiliya” which means the period of ignorance. But the irony is, only 12 verses later the
Quran seems to ridicule the laws that were set up in the period of ignorance, seemingly forgetting it had just
used one for theft. “Is it then the judgment of (the times of)
ignorance that they desire? And who is better than Allah to judge for a people who are sure?” Some Muslims take pride in a particular hadith
that tells us Mohamed didn’t like people trying to wriggle out of this barbaric punishment, and that he said
if his own daughter stole anything, he would gladly chop her hand off. But while it sounds only fair that rules are
rules no matter who it affects… Mohamed didn’t really follow through on what he preaches. When his son-in-law Ali wanted to marry another
woman on top of Mohamed’s daughter Fatima, suddenly rules are rules kind of went out of the window. I’ll link to those hadiths in the description
box for the sake of keeping this video tight. A question for Muslims. When you look at punishments
in Islam, do you defend them because you agree with them deep down? Or is it simply because it says so in
the Quran and hadith that you defend the indefensible? Are we seriously to expect that your conviction of these punishments
is purely from an objective assessment and you all happen to agree on the exact same punishment that was
practiced by desert bedouin pagans 1400 years ago. Severing limbs damages society, it leaves
those punished as a burden because of their inability to work and the constant care they now require, especially
when one of their feet is also chopped off. It’s also irreversible should a confession or witness testimony later
prove to be false. I remember when I was a Muslim, I and many
others around me had a tendency to look at the beauties of nature, the night sky, the countless stars, the nebulas,
the human body, the intracacies of how it functions and we would look at it all in amazement, and say to ourselves
“Subhanallah”… Glory be to God… We felt it was his signature and that we should be grateful for all the blessings
we had… But it never sat well with me how all this
beauty and complexity of something like a human hand with all its nerves, muscles and bones can just be chopped
off so savagely in an instant… What kind of God produces something beautiful and then destroys it altogether
when someone steals an egg or something of similar value. Besides, how can you even tell if people stealing
are doing so because of greed, or because of a psychological condition like Kleptomania which can be chemically
induced. Kleptomania is the recurrent failure to resist
urges to steal items that you generally don’t really need and that usually have little value. Kleptomania is
a serious mental health disorder that can cause much emotional pain to you and your loved ones if not treated. The cause of kleptomania isn’t known. Several
theories that suggest that changes in the brain may be at the root of kleptomania. More research is needed to better
understand these possible causes, but kleptomania may be:
Linked to problems with a naturally occurring brain chemical (neurotransmitter) called serotonin.
Serotonin helps regulate moods and emotions. Low levels of
serotonin are common in people prone to impulsive behaviors.
Related to addictive disorders, and stealing may cause the release of dopamine (another
neurotransmitter). Dopamine causes pleasurable feelings, and some people
seek this rewarding feeling again and again. Linked to the brain’s opioid system. Urges
are regulated by the brain’s opioid system. An imbalance in this system could make it harder to resist urges. It seems brain chemistry imbalances can trigger
the urge to steal, and as a result, it wouldn’t be very fair to have people punished this way when all they
need to fix the problem is potentially take medication to correct the chemical imbalance in the brain. So in conclusion, there is really no room
whatsoever for debate on this issue. ISIS are following the rules they find in the Quran and hadiths when dealing
with thieves and armed robbers. Next time I’ll be looking at child soldiers,
what ISIS are doing to children, and whether it’s sanctioned by Islam in any way. Share the video where you can… This series
is set up in a playlist to make it easier to share the whole thing and I’ll provide a link in the description to
it. Until next time, au revoir

  1. Awesome video as always. Your videos really opened my eyes to Islam and you are my favourite youtuber by far. I can't wait for your next series and I do hope you tackle another surat like you did with The Story of the Cave. That 4 part series opened my eyes to Islam for the very first time and pretty much change my whole world view and I got you to thank for that.

Didn't Muhammed commit armed robbery when he robbed the caravans going between Mecca and Medina and murdered people and took slaves? lol

If a muslim steals from a kafir harbi, it's jihad and the properties are booty.
Just like Muhammad stole from the caravans of Abu Sufyan.
Is muslim hand cut if he steals from a dhimmi or not ?

  7. So god creates law about severe punishment to theft AND kleptomania. What a bored god he is.

Also, I'd like to see how these laws would become when we have advancement in technology that allows us to rejoin and/or regrow lost organs.

I think you're doing fantastic scholarly work. This is probably the first time I've come across someone who systimatically analyzes and breaks down the Quran as you do in your channel. You should keep doing what you're doing.I think you should try doing for every major Surah as you did for Al-Kahf.

I don't blv in any of these fairy-tales..but US would be much better in regards of crime if we were more strict like Islam..see how many ppl would rape murder ..right down to theft if there was serious repercussions..but we're too soft in this country..what if we falsely accused someone..like there are not innocent ppl in prison/death row and guilty who walked with the judicial system..sometimes your wife needs a smack..no I'm jk, I think..

We may fall sometimes, however we learn to pick ourselves back up. The Muslim religion is antiqued in present date, Christian's came to this realisation 500 years ago (middle ages). I find it also offensive, that Muslims "think" they know who "God" is, and there the "only ones who know who {it} is"….. That in itself is offensive to his creation "humanity"! Muhammad….. For "him" to think he knows what "God" wants, is blasphemy in its own right!

I'm guessing from the title of the video it's bout how islam and isis chops off body parts which then shows how violent islam is. Sorry if I'm wrong bout your video. Now, the Bible Matthew 5:30 and other verses around it says wat to do bout those who steal commit adultery etc by cutting off hands etc so are you to say Christianity is violent? I mean like that sound violent to me. Btw, did you know, isis was formed by American government. Your videos are very good and interesting but shouldn't you do more research bout things first? Conspiracy or non conspiracy reading Quran before judging. I thought 9/11 was Muslim terrorist. I did homework alot alot of it and to my dismay been fooled and betrayed by who I thought I could trust and it was not Muslim. Besides our country is so badass, how could they ever let someone go all the way to New York from overseas flying so low without even knowing of it? Jus saying..think and gain knowledge before we judge
